Day 6 : Walk in a Siberian Forest

Our guide Constantin picks us up at 9.30 for a day's hike in a Siberian forest.  

Our first stop is at a memorial to the Dead killed during the Stalinist era. 

A few kilometres down the road is the official border between Europe and Asia, signposting the distance to some other major cities in Europe…

We set off on our hike in the National Park of ‘Deer Drawings’, which takes its name from some ancient drawings of deers found in caves nearby. We spend the next five hours chatting away with our guide and travel companions, a very friendly couple from Leicester, and immersing ourselves in the beauty of the nature around us, walking along the river, observing the local fishermen and enjoying a Russian picnic at the waterside. Young Russians a few metres away from us are grilling the fish they have just caught… It smells good!

Amongst the pine trees, looking towards the water I see a little statue of an angel overlooking the river. Apparently a Swedish woman had 48 of these ‘Angels of Peace’ positioned around the world on all continents to keep evil at bay following the events of September 11th2001. Curious!

After a fantastic day in the open, it’s back to Ekaterinburg to get ready for our 3 days on the train into Western Siberia…

It’s time to say farewell to Listvyanka. A truly enjoyable stay! We head back to Irkutsk, past the ‘Angara’ ship originally used to carry passengers across the lake and now a museum (its companion ‘the Baikal’ fell victim to the Russian civil war and ended its days at the bottom of Lake Baikal).  We arrive at the Angara hotel on one of the main squares of Irkutsk, Kirova Square. The hotel is a reasonably good 3 star in an 8 floor building with very long corridors. I suspect that in Soviet days it was probably the local equivalent of the Rossyia hotel in Moscow, a state-owned ‘monolith’. My suspicions are confirmed as, in walking round the building, we see that the back of it is a bare cement block with windows… They’ve given it a good facelift at the front J Irkutsk, the ‘Paris’ of Eastern Siberia, was founded in 1661 as a small Cossack garrison. Day 17 - Vladivostok... Last Day

Time to sleep in to counter the Trans-Siberian ‘jetlag’ you develop after having 1 or 2 hours chopped off every day as you head East on the train. Starting on Moscow time, Ekaterinenburg saw us move ahead by 2 hours, Irkutsk a further 2 hours and Vladivostok another 3… Our mission for the day? Russky Island. After failing abysmally to find the tour agent that should have taken us out there, we decide to DIY. Russky Island was off limits until 2000, as until then it was an area dedicated exclusively to military activities. Putin decided to turn it into a business and cultural centre. It is a large island, covered in verdant, thick vegetation with some beautiful beaches, which have yet to be developed. The island also hosts the state-of-the art new Far East Federal University, which we had intended to visit with the Lotos Co tour agency, as otherwise not accessible. Day 16 : the End of the Trans-Siberian - Vladivostok

We wake up overlooking the Pacific Ocean and are fast approaching Vladivostok, the end of our Trans-Siberian Railway adventure. '3 Days on the Train' Look Luckily we are able to get early check-in and indulge in a rich breakfast at the hotel restaurant. It is here that we notice for the first time how many Asians visit or live in Vladivostok.  When I was younger, I used to be able to distinguish the Chinese from the Japanese, but with age I have lost this ability… On asking we are informed that most of the other hotel guests are South Korean and a few are  Japanese. Our walks around town later in the day will confirm this is a prime destination for South Korean tourists. North Korea is round the corner, but I suspect there’s not too many tourists visiting from Pyongyang!
